Joe Louis Walker

Award-winning blues master, Blues Hall Of Fame member and Alligator recording artist Joe Louis Walker is known worldwide as one of the genre’s top musical trailblazers — a mesmerizing guitarist and soul-testifying vocalist. On his dynamic new CD, Walker’s music is equal parts rock ‘n’ roll fire and blistering, passionate blues.

In 2013 The Blues Foundation inducted Walker into The Blues Hall Of Fame. “I am honored to be in the company of the great artists already inducted,” Walker said at the time. “I hope to live up to the honor.” Joining the ranks of previous inductees including B.B. King, Hound Dog Taylor, Koko Taylor, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf and other blues greats while still at the peak of his musical powers, is, as Walker says, “a dream come true.”

With each subsequent release, Walker’s audience continues to grow, as his touring schedule continues to expand. He’s played all over the U.S. and Canada, major European festivals including The North Sea Jazz Festival, Glastonbury, Notodden and Montreux, as well as festivals in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Ireland, Turkey and Brazil. Now, with Hornet’s Nest, Walker is excited about bringing even more people to his music. “Blues is a big tent,” he says, “morphing into a bigger tent. Young folks like good blues when they hear it, and I’m here to make sure they want to listen.”

Deanna Bogart

Blues fans love Deanna Bogart for many reasons. She plays saxophone (just won her second award from Blues Foundation) she also plays piano with incredible skills and soul. Then she sings... and she has one of those voices that make you stop and listen. When you talk about Deanna you also have to mention she has a lovable personality that endears her fans to her for life.

Deanna has a long professional career and listing all her projects would take up an entire paper. She is known for hanging out with some of the best musicians in the business. Deanna has been at a few Blues From The Tops and she has built a fan base that she not only plays for... she also shops with and hikes with them, and you can see her with that horn all around town for a few days. She plays Saturday afternoon with her band and she is going to make a surprise visit to the Gospel show and a little treat with the Boogie Boys. Be paying attention; you will see something very special every time she takes the stage. If this is your first time to see Deanna you will be a fan in a matter of a few notes!

Chris Cain

Chris Cain's jazz-tinged, blues soaked guitar and deep, warm vocals have the maturity and authenticity of bluesmen many years his senior. His expressive style is the result of a lifetime of study and the relentless pursuit of music mastery. His passion and intensity are a blend of his mother's Greek ancestry and his father's soulful black heritage.

Cain was raised on stories of his father's childhood upbringing on Memphis' Historic Beale Street and attended his first B.B King concert at the tender age of three. Blues music played continuously on the home stereo and family outings were often trips to concerts. Cain recalls, "I remember when I was a kid, my Dad would be mowing the lawn with the stereo blasting Muddy Waters. When I look back, that was pretty cool! There was always music playing at our house, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert King, all the greats."

At the age of eight, Cain taught himself to play guitar and began playing professionally before he was eighteen. Chris studied music at San Jose City College, and was soon teaching jazz improvisation on campus. Over the next twenty years, Cain would also master piano, bass guitar, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone. The combination of his blues upbringing and his jazz studies melded to form the searing guitar style that sets Chris Cain apart and has moved him to the top ranks of the blues music scene.

Cain's debut recording,
Late Night City Blues (Blue Rock'it Records-1987) garnered four W.C. Handy Blues Award nominations, including Guitarist of the Year." Dan Forte of Guitar Player wrote, "An impressive debut album by a top notch guitarist." Cain's next two releases; "Cuttin Loose" (Blind Pig Records-1990) and "Can't Buy a Break" (Blind Pig Records-1992) collected a long list of awards and accolades. In August of 1995 Blind Pig released "Somewhere Along the Way" his 4th compilation of his unique brand of original music sophisticated blues, funk, jazz and gospel.

In 2003 Patrick Ford produced Chris's latest CD, "Hall Of Shame" (Blue Rock'it Records-2003). "...this is now the sixth Chris Cain solo release I have produced, not to mention his work with me on projects like the Ford Blues Bands' "In Memory Of Michael Bloomfield" CD, and I continue to be in awe of his incredible talent. As a guitarist/singer, Chris has been praised by mentors like Albert King and peers like Robben Ford."

Larry Nager (syndicated Scripts-Howard music critic) writes, "Nowadays most young blues players are Strat-wielding Stevie Ray Vaughan-a-bes. Not Chris Cain. With a voice that recalls B.B. King and a thick toned Gibson guitar sound reminiscent of Albert King, Cain is forging a unique style. With his own highly personalized songwriting, "Hall Of Shame" is a giant step in the development of one of the most compelling young bluesmen on today's scene."

Through his guitar mastery and remarkable songwriting ability, Chris Cain has established himself as a musical force to be reckoned with. And as San Jose Mercury News music reviewer John Orr writes, "more than anyone else, anywhere, Chris Cain represents the future of the blues."

Kirk Fletcher with Reese Wynans

When you are invited to play guitar with Bonamassa on a tour the magnitude of “Muddy Wolf” you don’t have to say much more. Kirk Fletcher has been around the block and the world a few times and people that have heard him play, know he is one of the most gifted guitarists in the blues.

Kirk has never been to Blues From The Top but you might have caught him with the Fabulous Thunderbirds. A lot of Colorado music fans saw him at Red Rocks with Bonamassa too doing the tribute to Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. Kirk was all over the JB cruise ship too. We expect Kirk to tear the stage up with some guitar work that he is well known for. Don’t miss this guy Saturday  morning. He might show up with the Gospel Allstars too. He has some history in the church playing guitar. He was excited about this idea. He will also be around Saturday night for some Category 5 action at Smokin’ Moe’s.

Blues From The Top is well known for pairing up some folks and this year is no different. Rock n’ Roll Hall of Famer, Reese Wynans will be in Kirk’s band for this Saturday set. Reese was on the Muddy Wolf tour as well. Fresh off his induction in to the R&R Hall of Fame, Reese is now a regular with Bonamassa. Reese has been to BFTT  a few times and most recently with The Healers. One of Colorado’s very favorite musicians and we are very proud that Reese takes the time to join us whenever he can.

In case you are new to Reese’s career, he played with just about everyone it seems and literally records on projects with too many people to list. He is best known for being with Stevie Ray Vaughan , Delbert McClinton, The Healers and now with Joe Bonamassa.

Katy Guillen & the Girls

Katy Guillen and The Girls are the next big thing coming out of Kansas City. They just keep turning them out there. Katy and her band went to the IBC a few years ago and made it to the finals. Katy is a great original styled  guitarist and writer. She was another one of the artists we have that played on the Bonamassa cruise. She made a lasting impression on everyone that had a chance to catch one of her electrifying sets. Her band holds down the fort while she handles the front of the stage. This is one of the most entertaining three piece bands on tour these days. She is playing on Saturday morning and she will be playing a short set for the Friday Pre-fest Party.

Austin Young / Michaela Rae / Sadie Johnson

Blues From The Top keeps with tradition by turning some young players loose early Saturday morning. Over the years this has been the official hand off of the future. This year we are proud to have help presenting them from Joe Bonamassa and Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation.

The band is made up of 4 dynamic and different guitarists. Austin Young is Colorado’s favorite blues son and he has built a huge following in the area. He has been a great asset to Blues From the Top over the years and his work with the younger talent these past years has been inspirational. Austin received a Gold Top Joe B signature mode from Joe and Blue Star last August, this guitar represents the belief some of his fans have in his promising future.

Michaela Rae could have just as easily gotten that Gold Top for all the promise she has. She has been the first of the young talent to pave the way for the rest. Not only can she hold her own with anyone that wields a guitar but she has a uniqueness that she has always dazzled the audiences with. Now a 20 year old guitar slinger, she will be at her 9th BFTT. The magic her and Austin have always shows itself during their combo sets.

Sadie Johnson has become a hot topic in music circles. She made her BFTT debut 4 years ago with her sister in a informal visit to the event. Sadie developed a lot of followers in the recent years with her band Sad Sam and now with Girls With Guitars tour. She is huge part of the Blue Star Connection music team and has donated a lot of time to kids that we take music to.

This year we went a long ways to find Hans Christian Nordin, Oslo Norway to be exact. Hans is going to be at Berkley this summer so we thought he should made a slight detour to Colorado and do his first big festival stateside. This kid is 16 and he has a seasoned sounding guitar approach. Inspired by the blues , his band at home Blue Devotion is serious and has a nice fan base on the build. We really are excited to have him hanging out in Colorado for a few days.

When you watch this band supported by Alex Goldberg and Forrest Raup on bass and drums, you are no doubt seeing the brightest picture of the future we have to offer. 10 am Saturday morning always rocks in Hideaway Park. Don’t miss a note!

Ronnie Baker Brooks Big Band

When you think of Chicago blues families, Lonnie Brooks is a name that should be first on the list. His legacy has been stamped with two sons Wayne and Ronnie. Whatever he has taught them they have learned well. Ronnie Baker Brooks has all the blues one man can have in him. His guitar tone is like magic to your ears and he surely has one of the greatest voices in the business. This year is a new beginning for Ronnie as he brings in an 8 piece band. Now you are going to hear the blues the way he wants you to hear it. He will be performing last on Sunday night and it should be a very powerful time to sit on the grass and enjoy a band that you will never forget. I know Ronnie is excited to get on the stage and make a memory for everyone.

Danielle Nicole Band

Danielle Nicole Schnebelen has been a singer her entire life. When you hear her voice you realize she is one of the rare ones. She has been in a few bands and you will remember her in Colorado with Trampled Under Foot. One of the most decorated bands of the last 10 years in blues. Danielle was the first woman to be nominated and to win a BMA for playing bass. Danielle has been to Blues From the Top with TUF/Mike Zito/and last year with the Healers.

This year Danielle brings in her new band, The Danielle Nicole Band. She has already been on tours with Buddy Guy and George Thorogood and been in front of huge crowds. A great blues festival has to have a strong female component and Danielle is that and then some.

Her band is stocked with talented mates. Mike Sedovic on keys, Brandon Miller on guitar, Jan Faircloth.  All Kansas City and all about the music Danielle likes to do. She has written music as long as she has been playing in a band and her songs are going to last forever. And when she covers Etta James you understand her roots are in very fertile ground.

To have Danielle around during Blues From The Top is perfect. She will be bringing Eli , who was almost born on tour in Colorado and she will be bringing a brand new baby just a few weeks old. We can’t wait to turn her new band loose on Sunday afternoon.

Eric Gales

Eric Gales grew up in a musical family with four brothers, two of them who learned to play the guitar upside down and left handed in the same fashion that Eric does. Eric’s brother Eugene Gales who played bass in the Eric Gales Band and his brother Little Jimmy King who had a thriving career as a blues artist before his untimely death. Eric released his first record at Age 16 for Elektra records to an amazing response from the media and music fans around the globe. Guitar World Magazine’s Reader’s Poll named Eric as “Best New Talent,” in 1991. After recording a second record for Elektra, all three brothers teamed up for The Gales Bros. “Left Hand Brand” which was recorded for the House of Blues label in 1996.

Through the years, it would not be unusual to look out in the audience and see artists like Carlos Santana, Eric Johnson, Keith Richards, B. B. King, and Eric Clapton, looking on with interest as Eric took his God-given talent and worked crowd after crowd into a frenzy. The new Millennium presented new opportunities for Eric and he was signed to a deal with Nightbird Records which was affiliated with the Hendrix family and distributed through MCA/Universal. Under this deal, Eric recorded the critically acclaimed record “That’s What I Am” in 2001 and hit the road, mesmerizing fans around the world with his uncanny connection to his
guitar. In 2006 Eric recorded the critically acclaimed CD “Crystal Vision” for Shrapnel Records and set the stage for his incredible Blues Bureau Division follow-up, “The Psychedelic Underground.” in 2007. In 2010 Eric hit a new stride altogether with the incredibly successful album "Relentless". In 2013 Eric, dUg Pinnick (King’s X) and Thomas Pridgen (formerly of the Mars Volta) released the first critically acclaimed record “PGP” on Magna Carta Records. The same year Eric released his first instrumental album “Ghost Notes” under the new banner “The Eric Gales Trio”.

As both an African-American left-handed guitarist of extraordinary ability and an expressive vocalist, it is natural for people to compare Eric to Hendrix but Eric has developed a unique hybrid blues/rock sound that also draws upon influences as diverse as Albert King and Eric Johnson. A unique amalgam of styles, Eric Gales stands head and shoulders among other guitarists in his genre.

Boogie Boys

Since its inception dated back to 2002, Boogie Boys have visited almost all countries in Europe and some on other continents. In their achievements they have already three studio albums and the concerts they play are great success wherever they go.

They toured alongside many stars (as a support or back-up band) such as: Shakin’ Stevens, Ray Manzarek (The Doors), Eric Burdon (The ANIMALS), Chris Barber, Phil Guy, Studebaker John, James Harman, Rod Piazza, Big Bill Morganfield, The Mofo Party Band, Mike Sanchez, Ana Popovic and many more.

In February 2009 as the only team from outside the United States Boogie Boys were finalists of the greatest blues competition in the world “International Blues Challenge - Memphis, USA”. After this success there came another one: in July 2009 they released album HEY YOU! and then during a tour in Canada they played concerts at major festivals: “Montreal Jazz Festival”, “MontTremblant Blues Festival” and “Quebec City Music Festival”.

In 2010 they played on a tour in California - USA, and in a “Blues TOP” survey they were chosen a “Band of the Year”. The album “Hey You” was qualified to the finals of “Best self-produced album - International Blues Challenge 2010”. Team leader Bart Szopiński and also other group members: Szymon Szopiński and Michał Cholewiński have repeatedly been awarded in Twój Blues magazine poll as “The Pianist of the Year” and “Instrumentalist of the Year”.

In 2011 they represented Poland at the 1st European Blues Challenge in Berlin and they were qualified to the “Top 3”. They also played at Scandinavian great and famous “Nottoden Blues Festival’.

In 2012, they were once again awarded as “Band of the Year” in “BLUES TOP 2011” survey. Their latest album “Made in Cali” was entirely produced in the USA together with the fantastic guests (such as guitarist Ron Thompson who worked with such stars as John Lee Hooker, Etta James, TinaTurner). Music producer of the album was John Clifton, recognized harmonica player, composer and singer.

In 2013 the album was announced to be “The Album of the Year” in “BLUES TOP 2012” poll.

At the beginning of 2014 they are starting nearly two-month tour of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Jarekus Singleton

At just 30 years old, Jarekus Singleton is a musical trailblazer with a bold vision for the future of the blues. Springing from the same Mississippi soil as Charley Patton, Muddy Waters and B.B. King, Singleton’s cutting-edge sound—equally rooted in rap, rock and blues traditions—is all his own. He melds hip-hop wordplay, rock energy and R&B grooves with contemporary and traditional blues, turning audiences of all ages into devoted fans. With his untamed guitar licks and strong, soulful voice effortlessly moving from ferocious and funky to slow and steamy to smoking hot, Singleton is a fresh, electrifying bluesman bursting at the seams with talent.

Singleton's Alligator debut, Refuse To Lose, features a scintillating guitar attack and lyrically startling original songs all sung with a natural storyteller’s voice. Produced by Singleton along with Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer and recorded at PM Music in Memphis, the album is an impossible-to-ignore first step onto the world stage. With songs telling real life, streetwise (sometimes funny) stories brimming with surprising images, pop culture references, infectious rhythms and unexpected musical twists, Refuse To Lose unleashes a new wave of blues for a new generation of fans.

Ashley Cleveland, Dorothy Morrison, Zac Harmon, Adrianna Marie, Deanna Bogart & others

This year we went to mountain top to pull together a Gospel show that will never be forgotten or done again. It just seemed like the year to make this popular part of the festival a bit bigger.

You are going to see multi Grammy winner
Ashley Cleveland doing some of her favorite songs. Ashley is a completely unique performer. She sings and plays this music for a reason and she is convincing and powerful. We can’t wait to see her in this setting.

Dorothy Morrison is one of the co writers of “Oh Happy Day”. She has never been to the festival and she is excited to come with some of her family and we have a feeling its going to be magnificent to have her voice ringing out in the morning. She will be joining the other singers as well. Adrianna Marie will be here and she has a few tunes to share with all of you. Deanna Bogart will be on piano and singing with the group. Eleanor Tsaig will be joining in as well.

The band is going to be electrifying: Reese Wynans on B3; Zac Harmon on vocals and guitar; Cedric Goodman, Andy Irvine, Deanna and some other surprises like Kirk Fletcher on guitar… and who knows who else will show up. They have all been invited. You can’t miss this and you can’t show up late. Let’s make this a morning to cherish.
